History

Margaret Cope was inspired to found a community dedicated to the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete, with education as its chief ministry in a framework of monastic prayer. This was in 1915.

As the community grew so did its work extend – not only in England but also in West Africa and Southern Africa.

Over the years the scope of the community’s ministry has included (in adddition to formal education) clinics, midwifery training, chaplaincies, parish work, hospice care, vocational training and retreat conducting.

More information is availble in a brief published history of 'The Whitby Sisters' which can be obtained from our shop.
